Beneath These Streets? Chinese Tunnel Myths and Historical Reality in Montana:

Stories of mysterious “Chinese tunnels” beneath towns like Billings, Butte, Missoula, Havre, and Kalispell have long captured Montanans’ imagination. But how much of this folklore is grounded in historical reality? This presentation explores the origins of these persistent legends, compares them with archaeological and documentary evidence, and examines why the stories continue to endure. Drawing on historic maps, Sanborn fire insurance records, newspaper accounts, oral histories, and archaeological studies, this session reveals how supposed tunnels were often basements, utility corridors, or commercial infrastructure. More importantly, it considers what these myths tell us about race, memory, and the desire for “hidden history,” while highlighting the vibrant, visible communities Chinese Montanans built above ground.
