Researching Your Local Cemetery: Join local historians and preservation experts for a captivating workshop exploring the rich history, symbolism, and preservation of cemeteries across Montana. This event will feature respected voices int he field, including Audrey Jaap and Lindsay Mulcahy from the Butte-Silver Bow Archives; Crystal Alegria from the Extreme History Project; Charlene Porsild from the Foundation for Montana History; and Mark Johnson, Fellow with the University of Notre Dame’s Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies. Attendees will learn about the unique history and cultural importance of Chinese cemeteries, uncover the meanings behind gravestone symbolism, explore the hidden histories within Helena’s cemeteries, and gain practical tools for researching their own local burial grounds. Optional tours of Home of Peace Cemetery and Forsestvale Cemetery’s China Row will follow.
